Where Is Your Happy Place?

For me, the holy temple is the perfect model for creating a place where God's spirit can reside. I want my home to be just as full of beauty, joy, peace, and light as I feel when I'm in the temple. By light, I refer not only to the radiant glow of sunshine, but also to the radiant light of God (D&C 50:24).

Bring Reminders of Christ into your Environment.

In my own quest for a "heaven - on - earth" home, the first step I took was to figuratively invite Jesus Christ to join our family by bringing reminders of Him into our home.

-- I placed a white marble Christus statue on a bookshelf at the top of our stairway. As we ascend up the stairs, it beacons us with open arms as if declaring, “Come unto me.”

-- While we have several framed artworks of Jesus, the one that inspires me the most is “Focus on Me, Not the Storm” by Midu Roy. It kept me centered on Christ during the global Covid pandemic that started in 2020. I placed a framed copy of this painting on my bathroom wall so I could see it every morning while getting ready for the day. I love the confident look on Christ’s face even while He’s in the middle of a wild storm. That storm analogy helps me to “Think Celestial” and be at peace, even in times of trial.

-- It is said, "If you want to talk to God, pray. If you want God to talk to you, read His word in the scriptures." With that in mind, we placed copies of the scriptures within easy reach throughout the house giving Him opportunity to communicate with us all day long. Remarkably, when we open to any verse and start reading, those particular words usually relate to the needs of that very moment.

“This house shall be a healthful habitation if it be built unto my name, and if the governor which shall be appointed unto it shall not suffer any pollution to come upon it. It shall be holy, or the Lord your God will not dwell therein.” (D&C 124:24)

“…He will make her wilderness like Eden and her desert like the garden of the Lord. Joy and gladness shall be found therein, thanksgiving and the voice of melody.” (BOM 2 Nephi 8:3)

"Organize yourselves; prepare every needful thing; and establish a house, even a house of prayer, a house of fasting, a house of faith, a house of learning, a house of glory, a house of order, a house of God." (D&C 88:119

"And my people shall dwell in a peaceable habitation, and in sure dwellings, and in quiet resting places." (Bible. Isaiah 32:18)

"Through wisdom is a house built; and by understanding it is established, and by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches." (Bible. Proverbs 24:3-4)
